Pastorates living inside
the premises of Emmanuel Baptist Church Cathedral located in Sabo Oke area of
Ilorin, Kwara State were yesterday robbed by six men of the underworld.
It was gathered that the
pastors were dispossessed of their belongings such as laptops, trinkets and
some undisclosed amount of money.
The robbers came in search
of the proceeds raised from an event which the church had on Sunday.
From the information
gathered, the hoodlums overpowered five security men on duty after scaling
through the fence of the church.
According to a member of
the security guards on duty at the time of the incident, the hoodlums seized
one of them and asked him to lead them to where the church keeps their
proceeds.
The security guard who
spoke on the ground of anonymity said, “The robbers used diggers, sledge
hammers and an axe to break the safe, but did not find any money there.
“The disappointed robbers
commanded one of us to take them to the vicarage. The robbers then ordered the
vicar to bring out the church money or they would shoot him dead.”
The security guard noted
that they had to plead with the hoodlums not to shoot the clergymen as they
vicar is not given the church proceeds, but only relies on his wages.
He further stated that the
entire pastorates were robbed in an operation that lasted for three hours after
they reluctantly released the Vicar.
Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, the
Public Relations Officer of Kwara State Police Command, said the church did not
make a distress call to the police as at the time the robbery was going on and
they are yet to make any official report to the police.
