Sergio Agüero scored four goals and missed a penalty for
Manchester City in the 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling encounter
at the Etihad Stadium that saw four penalties awarded.
The Argentine went into the match having scored five
goals in five previous matches against Spurs and it took him all of 13 minutes
to haunt the Londoners again, slotting into Hugo Lloris’ bottom corner after
being picked out in the box by a Frank Lampard pass.
City’s lead lasted only a minute though, as Spanish
striker Roberto Soldado’s through ball was finished off by Danish playmaker
Christian Eriksen to pull Spurs level.
The match’s high tempo start was sustained when Agüero
restored the home side’s lead in the 20th minute from the penalty spot
following Erik Lamela’s foul on Frank Lampard in the area.
The Argentine striker then missed a chance to seal a
first half hattrick when Lloris saved another penalty from him just after the
half-hour mark, with Eriksen and Ryan Moss being denied by Joe Hart as City
went into the break with a 2-1 lead.
Spurs still failed to pull back again when Soldado missed
a penalty just after the hour mark as his torrid 2014 continued, with just one
league goal scored in 2014.
Agüero on the contrary completed his hattrick minutes
later with another penalty before wrapping up the win with a fourth in the 72nd
minute to take his Premier League tally this season to nine goals, equal with
Chelsea’s Diego Costa.
The four goals by Agüero made him City’s all-time to
scorer in the Premier League with 61 goals in 95 appearances.
James Milner could have added a fifth for City five
minutes to the end but the England international’s curling effort from 20 yards
found the post instead.
The win meanwhile keeps City in second spot with 17
points
